Casualties’ Identities from Last Night’s Accident Near Seoul City Hall All Confirmed

On the night of July 1, 2024, a traffic accident occurred at an intersection near Seoul City Hall Station in Jung-gu, Seoul, resulting in 9 deaths and 4 injuries (1 seriously injured and 3 with minor injuries). Of the 9 people who died, 6 died at the scene and 3 died while being transported to the hospital.

It has been identified that the deceased include 2 city hall employees, 4 bank employees, and 3 hospital employees. All 9 deceased were men, with 4 in their 30s, 1 in his 40s, and 4 in their 50s.One of the bank employees worked at a major bank headquartered near City Hall Station and had been promoted on the day of the accident.

The accident occurred at around 9:27 PM on July 1, when a 68-year-old man named Mr. A was driving a Genesis motor that exited a hotel near City Hall Station and drove the wrong way on a one-way four-lane road. Mr. A hit two vehicles in succession and then struck pedestrians on the sidewalk and crosswalk. The car continued moving for about 100 meters before stopping in front of exit 12 of City Hall Station on the opposite side. The total distance of the wrong-way driving was approximately 200 meters.

Mr. A, who was apprehended by the police at the scene, claimed that the accident was caused by sudden unintended acceleration, a phenomenon where a vehicle accelerates unexpectedly due to a malfunction. Test results showed that Mr. A was not intoxicated by alcohol. A police official stated, ”We will promptly and rigorously investigate the cause and circumstances of the accident through the driver’s statements, CCTV footage, and black box recordings.” Condolence for all the families who lost their loved ones.
