Physical Discipline Training is Prohibited for Trainees in the South Korean Military

From now on, disciplinary physical training for trainees in the Korean military, commonly known as ‘punishment training,’ will be prohibited.

The Ministry of National Defense announced this measure after a trainee in the army died last month while undergoing disciplinary training that did not comply with regulations. During the ‘Countermeasure Meeting on the Accident in the Recruit Training Center,’ the Ministry decided to exclude physical training such as running or walking with full gear from the disciplinary training for trainees. Instead, they will only conduct mental training such as meditation and military law education. Additionally, they stated that when disciplinary training is implemented, a personal appeal process will be in place to ensure fairness.
