AMAZING. BEAUTIFUL. BREATHTAKING.
This is not the most popular palace and probably smallest of the three palaces and I was a little
skeptical about the visit, but it is worth visiting particularly at night and shouldn’t be missed. It
is spectacular in the night lights, moreso than in daylight. Once lit, the illuminating palace glow
is unbelievably beautiful. This is not captured during a day visit.
We met our guide, Alan Han, outside of the City Hall subway exit. Alan is extremely
knowledgeable in Korean history and the stories behind the palace. We learned about the
Korean empire, how this palace signifies the end of the Joseon Dynasty and the start of the
annexation of Korea by Japan in the 20 th century. The palace is unique because it has both
Western style and traditional Korean architecture. One of the Western styled buildings is a
museum that’s open to the public. The subject matter was very captivating and truly interesting
to us. Alan is a fantastic guide, and he knows a lot about the history of the palace, down to the
minutiae facts; he welcomes all questions about the historical significance or history in general.
Our experience was very memorable with Alan and we still talk about our experience as one of
our highlights during our visit to Seoul.
The palace is amazing and so beautiful at night when it is glowing in the bold and vibrant red,
gold, blue and green colors. The night tour should not be overlooked.
