To commemorate the 300th Anniversary of King Yeongjo’s Enthronement, the National Museum of Korea presents a special exhibition on Yeongjo <TangTang PyeongPyeong – The Power of Words and Pictures>.
Yeongjo was the 21st king of the late Joseon Dynasty. His reign lasted from 1724 to 1776, making him the longest reigning king in Joseon dynasty. He experienced the harmful effects of party rivalries during his ascension to the throne and afterwards, and actively implemented the “Tangpyeong Policy” to stabilize the country. In response to the socioeconomic changes in the late Joseon Dynasty, he made great efforts to calm the people through civil stability.
“The term is derived from an old phrase meaning “not favoring any side,” and it is a policy that aims to make politics fair and upright so that there is no fighting between sides in mediation. It was first implemented during the reign of King Sukjong, but it did not fulfill its original intention. Then, during the reign of Yeongjo, it was implemented more strongly, and Jeongjo continued it. In a nutshell, the “Tangpyeong Policy” was meant to weaken the power of the vassals who were vying for power and give the king more power.
