3 Things to Stop Expecting From Korea

It’s quite hard to find trash cans outside. There are obviously trash cans, but when you decide to throw out the trash, magic happens : You can’t find a trash can! You might have to bring the trash with you to throw it away later.

1. You will NOT easily find a trash can

It’s quite hard to find trash cans outside. There are obviously trash cans, but when you decide to throw out the trash, magic happens : You can’t find a trash can! You might have to bring the trash with you to throw it away later.

WHY NO TRASH CANS?

The government intentionally removed trash cans in public areas, worrying that people would throw out their household waste. There were too many illegal dumping cases. (But, it seems like it’s not working well ????)

2. Cars will NOT wait for you

In Korea, it’s important to watch out for cars. Not all cars, but many cars can get quite aggressive, especially in the alleys or crosswalks without traffic lights. Instead of expecting the cars to stop, it’s much safer for you to stop first.

WHY CARS DON’T WAIT?

Sadly, in Korea, cars come before people. If you try to cross a road that doesn’t have a traffic light, you’ll often see cars and motorcycles trying to pass before you. It seems like Korea doesn’t have a person-centered transportation culture yet. Instead, it’s more car-centered.

QUICK TIP!

You should be careful even when crossing the road with traffic lights at intersections with right-turning cars.

3. Taking a bus will NOT be easy

Korea is known for easy, convenient public transportation. But that doesn’t mean it’s a piece of a cake. Directions can be confusing, especially with buses! If you’re not sure about taking the bus, we recommend taking the subway with Subway Korea App 🙂

WHY HARD?

????‍???? Which way should I go?

The location of a bus stop varies depending on which direction you are going. Because Korea has bus stops in the middle and each side of the road, it becomes even more complicated.

???? When should I press the bell?

You have to press the bell to get off of the bus, which means you need to know exactly where you are at. Although there is an English announcement, it can be hard to keep listening (and you might not hear due to outdoor noise!)
