4 Korean Films That are Invited to Cannes International Film Festival 2023

Cannes International Film Festival, an annual film festival held in Cannes, France, is one of the Big Five major international film festivals, including Venice Film Festival in Italy, Berlin International Film Festival in Germany, Toronto International Film Festival in Canada and Sundance Film Festival in the United States. 

Although no Korean films have been selected as candidates for “In Competition” category, 4 Korean films will be introduced for the first time at the Cannes Film Festival this year.


1.

Korean title: 화란
English title: Hopeless
Genre: Noir, Drama
Director: Kim Chang-hoon
Category: Un Certain Regard

In the 1970s, director Kim is in obsession with the end of his film ‘Cobweb.’ He thinks the film will get much better if the ending is re-filmed. Despite government censorship and unsupportive actors and producers, he carries out his plan of re-filming the ending.

There’s a happy newlyweds, Hyun-soo (husband) and Soo-jin (wife). Hyun-soo, out of a sudden, behaves abnormally while sleeping. The two people struggles to unravel the secrets of Hyun-soo’s abnormal behavior and the horror that begins the moment he falls asleep.

Category: Directors’ Fortnight

There’s a woman in her 40s who lives in a friend’s house with a cat. A 20-something-year-old woman visits her. There’s a man in his 70s who lives alone after his cat recently passed away. A 30-something-year-old man visits him. The story of the two intersects throughout the movie.
