What’s Pyeong-Naeng (Pyongyang Naengmyeon)?

Pyongyang naengmyeon is a style of naengmyeon, a traditional Korean cold noodle dish, that originated from the Pyongyang region in North Korea.

  • While most naengmyeon in South Korea are made with potato or sweet potato starch, Pyongyang naengmyeon is made primarily with buckwheat.
  • South Korean naengmyeon typically has a chewy texture, whereas Pyongyang naengmyeon is known for its soft and easily breakable noodles.
  • Pyongyang naengmyeon is mild and light in flavor, so first-timers often describe it as bland or even say it tastes like “washed rag water,” showing that it can be quite polarizing. However, it has many devoted fans who say they become more and more addicted to it over time.
