📍Hannam dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul
Esther Schipper Gallery, founded in 1989 in Cologne, Germany, is now based in Berlin and is recognized as a leading contemporary art gallery. Initially focused on German artists, it has expanded its collaborations with international artists, showcasing works from diverse cultural backgrounds. Recently, the gallery opened its first Asian branch in Itaewon, Seoul, with another location set to open in Hannam-dong in February, 2025.
📍Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do
Shinan-gun is undertaking a project to transform all 1,004 islands into art museums and galleries. One of the key attractions is the Floating Museum. The Floating Museum, designed to resemble floating sun-dried salt, has garnered significant attention. It was designed by Yukinori Yanagi, who also oversaw the production of artworks, and is credited with transforming Inujima Island in Japan into an art island. The museum is being built on Anjwa Island, the birthplace of pioneering abstract artist Kim Whanki, and is set to open in May this year.
📍45, Wondae-ro, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do
Gangneung Museum of Art (formerly Sorol Art Museum) will reopen in April, marking the beginning of its full-scale exhibition program. Designed by the renowned architectural firm Richard Meier & Partners, the museum seamlessly integrates people, nature, art, and architecture. Even before its opening, it garnered significant attention as a premier cultural and artistic landmark in Gangneung. To celebrate its reopening, a special exhibition featuring pioneering Korean abstract artist Kim Whanki is planned.
📍Yeonhui-dong, Seoul
The building is scheduled to be constructed next to the Park Seo-bo Foundation in Yeonhui-dong.
📍68, Madeul-ro 13-gil, Dobong-gu, Seoul
The Seoul Museum of Photography is set to open in May 2025 in the Dobong district. As the only public photography museum in Korea, it encompasses the entire spectrum of photographic culture. An exhibition highlighting five Korean photographers will be held as part of the inaugural exhibition.
The Seo Seoul Museum of Art, opening in July, will be the city’s first public media art-specialized museum. Located in Geumcheon-gu’s Geumnarae Central Park, it will feature innovative media art exhibitions and offer arts education and research. The museum’s flexible spaces will allow citizens to interact with art, and a digital platform will provide online exhibitions and digital content for those unable to visit.
