7 Most Famous Sunrise Spots in Korea

1. 강원도 강릉시 정동진 해변
Jeongdongjin Beach, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do

The most well-known sunrise spot in Korea that 9 out of 10 Koreans know about. Being the filming site of 1995’s legendary drama <Sandglass>, it quickly acquired fame. 


2. 제주도 서귀포시 성산 일출봉
Seongsan Ilchulbong, Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do

The most famous “tuff cone crater” sunrise spot in Jeju that was formed by a volcanic eruption 5,000 years ago. You can see the sun slowly rising from the sea.


3. 전라북도 부안군 변산 해수욕장
Byeonsan Beach, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do

Located near Byeonsanbando National Park, it’s the only park in Korea with a mix of mountains and sea. Byeonsan beach is a representative beach of the west coast.

5. 울산 울주군 간절곶
Ganjeolgot, Ulju-gun, Ulsan

It’s the place where the sun rises first in inland Korea. You can enjoy open East Sea and beautiful rock cliff. In 2018, the symbol of Cabo da Roca in Sintras, Portugal was installed in Ganjeolgot.


6. 경상북도 포항시 호미곶
Homigot, Pohang-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do

Located at the eastern end of Pohang, it’s also one of the first places the sun rises in inland Korea. (The sun rises a minute later than Ganjeolgot.) There are the statues called “Hands of Harmony.” The left hand is on the land and the right hand is in the sea.


7. 서울 마포구 하늘공원
Haneul Park, Mapo-gu, Seoul

If you can’t go outside of Seoul, you can still enjoy the sunrise in Haneul Park. (Haneul means sky.) You can easily enjoy the sunrise as it’s located in the highlands.
