The english title is also called as “The War of Flower.”
This film, directed by Choi Dong-hoon, is full of iconic scenes and lines that literally all Koreans know (with a little bit of exaggeration).
Based on the cartoon by Heo Young-man, the movie is about a man named Goni falling into the world of hwatu and gambling.
Hwatu (화투) is a card game with flower decorated cards, symbolizing 12 months of the year. The rules are more complicated than they may look, but to make a long story short, you have to match the cards that belong to the same set.
It’s one of my favorite Korean movies personally, as it not only talks about gambling, but also about life and relationships. It was released in 2006 and many people still talk about the movie, so it’s a pretty classic movie!
Two sequels came out in 2014 and 2019 respectively, but they didn’t get as much fame as the first movie.
It’s an R-rated movie. If you are under 19, please wait few more years.
