The Denver Art Museum has been hosting the special exhibition Lunar Phases: Korean Moon Jars since March 2, 2025. This exhibition features a total of 12 moon jars—six crafted during the late Joseon period (late 17th to early 18th century) and six created by contemporary ceramic artists.
Since the early 20th century, moon jars have been admired by artists and art historians worldwide, including Kim Whanki, Choi Sunu, and Bernard Leach. Named ”moon jars“ in the 1950s, these vessels captivate viewers with their simple yet profound form and warm, milky-white glaze, drawing attention across time and borders. In addition to the moon jars, the exhibition presents nine contemporary artworks, including paintings, photographs, videos, and installations, all inspired by these iconic ceramics. This special showcase brings the essence of Korean aesthetics to the global audiences.
