April 2024 : Top 7 Exhibitions to Visit in South Korea

1. 36 Months of Loss

📍 Art Sonje Center, The Ground (Hanok) 📅 Feb 16 – May 12, 2024

Dan Lie presents his first solo exhibition in South Korea. Based in Berlin with roots in both Indonesia and Brazil, Lie showcases new works based on personal experiences and research on Korean traditional culture. In 2024, marking the third anniversary of the artist’s father’s passing, Dan Lee reinterprets the Korean funeral culture by presenting his own mourning style using materials such as sambe (Korean traditional paper), straw, and earthenware.

2. YOON HYUP NOCTURNE CITY

📍 Lotte Museum 📅 Feb 24 – May 26, 2024

The exhibition explores the theme of Nocturnes, musical compositions unfolding in the city’s night. It showcases various expressions and variations by the artist, connecting personal visual experiences with lines and dots to create a unique artistic method imbued with rhythm.

3. From Dawn to Dusk : National Museum Stockholm Collection

📍 My Art Museum 📅 Mar 31 – Aug 25, 2024

The exhibition showcases 75 masterpieces by prominent artists representing Sweden, Denmark, and Norway, including Swedish national painter Carl Larsson, as well as Hanna Pauli, Anders Zorn, and others. Explore the works of Scandinavian artists from the late 19th century and discover their impact on the world of art.

4. Steven Harrington: Stay Mello

📍 Sorol Art Museum 📅 Mar 7 – July 14, 2024

Steven Harrington, who has been active primarily in Los Angeles, will have his work unveiled for the first time in Korea. Behind his vibrant palette, his pieces offer visual delight, embodying contemplations on life’s balance, anxiety, and the subconscious that the artist has pondered over for a long time.

5. KIAN84 EXHIBITION : KIANDO floating on SEOUL

📍 Daelim Changgo 📅 Mar 23 – Apr 20, 2024

KIAN84 is a South Korean cartoonist and entertainer. His notable work includes the webtoon ‘Fashion King.’ This marks his second solo exhibition, as he has recently been more actively involved as an entertainer and painter, transitioning from his career as a cartoonist. Through this exhibition, he shares insights into the feelings of ‘once again’ and ‘anew’ that he has experienced in life.

6. Bologna Illustration

📍CxC Art Museum 📅 Jan 19 – Apr 21, 2024

This exhibition commemorates the 60th anniversary of the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, the world’s largest event for children’s literature, with over 1,500 publishers participating from around 80 countries annually. Enjoy over 400 works from 80 illustrators of the year.

7. Marilyn Minter

📍 Lehmann Maupin 📅 Mar 7 – Apr 27, 2024

This is a solo exhibition by Minter, who has been constructing images that simultaneously employ photorealism and abstraction across various fields such as photography, painting, and video for decades. Rather than concealing and refining reality, she reconstructs the frame of femininity by opting for overt exposure.
