August 2024 : Top 9 Exhibitions to Visit in Seoul

It‘s August 2024 in Seoul, and the heat is relentless. Seoul is so sweltering that even just sitting still makes you sweat. There are many great exhibitions to enjoy indoors, so I hope you have a wonderful time there!

1. 2024 ASYAAF

National Theater Company of Korea Baek Seonghui & Jang Minho Theater
July 30, 2024 – August 25, 2024

First launched in 2008, ASYAAF (Asian Students and Young Artists Art Festival) is Korea’s largest art fair supporting the dreams of young artists. This exhibition provides an opportunity to explore a wide range of works by emerging artists at affordable prices.

2. The Deep Green I Experienced

9 DIA Contemporary

This exhibition explores themes of “primordial wounds and self-healing resilience” that have been studied over a long period. Through the use of new materials, the works vividly visualize these ideas, evoking a mysterious sense of life and energy pulsating like that of a forest, with a striking sense of vitality and dimensionality.

3. VESTIGE _ Rhizome of Existence

This special exhibition commemorates the 100th anniversary of the birth of renowned artist Chun Kyung-ja, while also marking the first solo exhibition in Korea of her daughter, Sumita Kim. The show offers a unique opportunity to experience Sumita Kim’s distinct artistic style, which she has developed independently from her mother’s legacy.

4. Daniel Arsham: Seoul 3024 – Future Relic

The exhibition showcases over 250 works by globally renowned artist Daniel Arsham, known for transcending the boundaries of art and time. The exhibit includes both Arsham’s early works and new pieces created specifically for this event.

5. Brilliant Sunlight

6. James Rosenquist

This exhibition presents for the first time in Korea the monumental paintings and collages by renowned American Pop Art artist James Rosenquist. Spanning over 60 years of the artist’s career, the exhibition offers a comprehensive overview of Rosenquist’s artistic journey.

7. 30th Anniversary Exhibition: Detective Conan

Museum X and O Museum

This exhibition, which has been held in various cities across Japan, including Tokyo, brings together everything related to the legendary manga “Detective Conan” by Gosho Aoyama, celebrating its 30 years of serialization since 1994. Visitors can explore the world of the original work and its impact over the past three decades in this comprehensive exhibition.

8. I Am Doing Well

Seokpajeong Seoul Museum of Art

The Seokpajeong Seoul Museum of Art is hosting a major collection exhibition titled I Am Doing Well. This exhibition features works by prominent figures in Korean art history, along with writings and letters that offer insights into their inner worlds. The display includes Shin Saimdang’s Chochungdo, Kim Jeong-hee’s hanging scroll, Lee Ufan’s Dialogue, Lee Dae-won’s Pear Blossoms, and letters and drawings by Lee Jung-seob.

9. American Pop Art Masters Exhibition

Insa Central Museum
✔ May 1, 2024 – September 18, 2024

The American Pop Art Masters Exhibition, on global tour, is being held in Seoul for the first time in Asia. The exhibition features works by eight iconic pop art masters, including Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and Robert Indiana, who were instrumental in establishing New York as a major art center. Additionally, approximately 280 pieces created by 12 contemporary Korean pop art artists will be showcased.
