Cattle Buried Around 500 Years Ago Discovered at Jongmyo Shrine in Seoul

Near Jongmyo Shrine in Seoul, a pile of cattle bones estimated to date back to the Joseon Dynasty has been discovered. It is considered highly unusual as there have been few instances where such a large quantity of animal bones, especially cattle, have been unearthed within the remains of Hanyang City Wall. Based on the types and quantities of bones recovered so far, it is estimated that at least 7 to 8 cattle were buried. Most of the discovered bones are relatively intact, showing no signs of cutting or butchering.

Experts speculate that they were deliberately buried for a specific purpose rather than discarded after consumption of beef, as there are no clear slaughter marks. The proximity to Jongmyo Shrine suggests a likelihood of burial related to ancestral rituals.

Currently, three research institutions are jointly conducting excavation work in the area. This discovery is expected to play a significant role in understanding the methods of cattle husbandry and utilization within Hanyang City Wall.
