울지마 톤즈 / Don’t Cry For Me Sudan
✔ The documentary is about Catholic Father Tae-seok Lee who went to the small Sudan village of Tonj in 2001 to share his love for the people.
✔ He worked as a father, doctor, teacher, conductor, and architect for about 8 years. It mainly shows how he interacted with children at the Tonj village. He built a hospital, a school and gathered children to form a brass band.
“These days, I often think, ‘If it were Jesus, would he have built a school or a cathedral first?” No matter how much I think about it, it seems that he would build the school first. A holy school like a cathedral that teaches love, a school full of affection that makes you feel like ‘my home’” (From Tae-seok Lee’s book <Will You Be My Friend?>)
✔ He was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in 2008 and passed away after two years in Korea, unable to return to Tonj.
✔ The title “Don’t Cry for Me Sudan” is derived from the scene where children of the Dinka people shed tears after the death of Father Tae-seok Lee. The Dinka people are known to culturally feel ashamed to shed tears, but when Father Tae-seok Lee passed away, they couldn’t help but cry.
✔ Two of his students came to Korea to go to the medical school (Inje University College of Medicine) at Father Tae-seok Lee’s suggestion. They have now become a doctor in Korea 🙂
The documentary is on Netflix.
