‘Drug Testing’ For All South Korean Military Recruits

Military Manpower Administration Of Korea Has Announced That It Will Conduct ‘Drug Tests’ For All Applicants For Enlistment From The Second Half Of This Year

This includes all candidates for enlistment screening and all candidates for active duty recruitment physicals. Military Manpower Administration amended the Military Service Act to provide a legal basis for the inclusion of tests for drug use, smoking, and ingestion under the Narcotic Drugs Control Act in the existing ‘physical examination’ and ‘psychological examination’ during the enlistment screening.

How Is Drug Testing Currently Conducted?

Currently, five types of narcotics (meth, cocaine, opium, cannabis, and ecstasy) are selectively tested for “those who have stated that they have taken narcotics” and “those who are deemed necessary for testing by a military service evaluation doctor.

What Will Be The Most Significant Change After The Amendments Take Effect?

With future amendments, 260,000 people are expected to be tested for drugs annually by 2025, and the number of drugs tested will increase to seven, with two more benzodiazepines and ketamine.
