International Women’s Day originated from early 20th-century labor and socialist movements, with significant events such as the 1908 march in New York City demanding better rights. It gained international recognition when the United Nations began celebrating it in the 1975 International Women’s Year. Since then, it has become a global event, celebrating women’s achievements and advocating for gender equality.
In South Korea, commemorations of International Women’s Day began as early as 1920 with figures like Na Hye-sok and Park In-deok. However, these celebrations were interrupted by Japanese oppression until officially resuming in 1985. Then, on February 20, 2018, a partial amendment to the Gender Equality Act, designating March 8th as a legal holiday for Women’s Day, was passed in the National Assembly, officially designating March 8th as ‘Women’s Day’ in South Korea.
