Introducing MMCA For Those Who Want To Enjoy Artwork in Korea

MMCA (National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea)

It’s a contemporary art museum, established in 1969. The museum has around 10,000 artworks, including artworks by renowned Korean and international contemporary artists. 

MMCA has four branches: Seoul, Deoksugung, Gwacheon, and Cheongju.

With diverse exhibitions and events, many Koreans and tourists visit MMCA to appreciate and enjoy artwork. It runs permanent and special exhibitions.

1. 서울 Seoul

???? Address: 30, Samcheong-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul 
⏰ Hour: Monday ~ Friday, Sunday 10:00 – 18:00, Wednesday, Saturday 10:00 – 21:00

  • Is located next to Gyeongbokgung Palace.
  • Is right in the center of Seoul city.
  • Is most accessible of the four branches.

2. 덕수궁 Deoksugung

???? Address: 99, Sejong-daero, Jung-gu, Seoul 
⏰ Hour: Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Sunday 10:00 – 18:00, Wednesday, Saturday 10:00 – 21:00

  • Is located inside Deoksugung Palace. You need to pay the entrance fee (1,000 KRW) for the palace to visit the museum.
  • Has many artworks from the late period of the Joseon Dynasty to the pre-liberation period.

3. 과천 Gwacheon

???? Address: 313, Gwangmyeong-ro, Gwacheon-si, Gyeonggi-do
⏰ Hour: Tuesday ~ Sunday 10:00 – 18:00 (closed on Monday)

  • Is located inside the Seoul Grand Park.
  • Was the center of the MMCA branches before the Seoul branch opened.
  • Has one of the most famous video artworks by Paik Nam June, ‘The More, The Better.’

4. 청주 Cheongju

???? Address: 314, Sangdang-ro, Cheongwon-gu, Cheongju-si, Chungcheongbuk-do
⏰ Hour: Tuesday ~ Sunday 10:00 – 18:00

  • Was built as a storage and conservation center to preserve the collections of MMCA. There are exhibitions as well.
  • The building was originally a tobacco manufacturing building.
