Introducing the Three Recipients of the ‘2024 Young Architect Award’ in South Korea

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of South Korea Has Announced The Three Recipients Of The 2024 ’Young Architect Award

Since 2008, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of South Korea has been operating the ‘Korea’s Young Architect Award’ to discover and nurture outstanding young architects.

Sun Lab Architect’s Hyeon Seung-heon

Hyeon Seung-heon was praised for his efforts to address neglected social realities through architectural and spatial solutions, which resonated with many people. The “Share Us” he planned has led the transformation of the goshiwon(고시원). Goshiwon is a unique Korean housing type that refers to a business providing living or lodging accommodations within a “partitioned room” equipped with facilities for studying. It is notorious for its extremely poor living conditions, often characterized by cramped spaces and even the absence of windows. His influence stands out for transforming these spaces into more comfortable environments and for fostering community building.

Ground Architecture’s Kim Hanjoong

Kim Han-jung reminded us that architecture, as a product of materials and processes, should focus on the process of creation through the metaphor of screws and bolts. He is particularly interested in the small rather than the large and values the individual over the whole in his work. He believes that furniture, interior spaces, architecture, and cities are interconnected and works on projects related to these aspects.

PD2GA Architect’s Cho Kyungbin

Cho Kyungbin’s intense and composed approach to enduring architectural situations and finding appropriate solutions was highly praised for its manifestation in his architecture. The Namsan-dong Community Facility, which holds significance in this award, is situated at the boundary where a small rural village and the fields of the outskirts of Gwangju meet. It presents a scene with low walls and a roof that is lower in height than the surrounding landscape. It seems as though the architect intended to blend the building into the landscape, making it less noticeable. However, as time passes, the building that forms the backdrop becomes visible.
