Korea Organic Restaurant Recommendation : Giwajip Sundubu

Entrance of Giwajip Sundubu

Hello UoH friends ???? Today we would like to recommend a restaurant located in Namyangju city, Korea.

Namyangju-city is located in Gyenggi Province, South Korea. It’s northeastern city from Seoul – only about an hour car ride from Seoul. When getting tired of Seoul city life, we like to visit Namayngju-city – close enough to Seoul and yet very peaceful. You can enjoy peaceful vibes of Southern Han Riverbank. They city is also known as “slow city’“ and popular for some eco-friendly, organic farming as well as fisheries.

The restaurant we visited is called “Giwajip Sundubu (기와집 순두부)”. Let’s do a quick word review. “Giwajip” means “traditional tile-roofed house” and “Sundubu” means “soft tofu” in Korean. Yes, this restaurant is specialized in handmade soft tofu dishes. Food are all healthy, organic, delicious and very natural.

Main menus are : 순두부백반 (soft tofu stew meal; 9000 KRW), 콩탕백반 (bean stew meal; 9000 KRW), 비빔밥 (bibimpbap meaning Korean mixed rice; 9000 KRW), 수육 (steamed pork; 25000 KRW), 생두부 & 수육 (Tofu & Steamed Pork; 20000 KRW), and more.

These are what we ordered. Tofu & steamed pork (middle), soft tofu (right), and bean stew (left). Every meal is served with healthy and a variety of side dishes including kimchi.

This is called “soft tofu stew”. Here at Giwajip Sundubu, it’s special because everything is hand-made. People who like natural taste of ingredients would especially enjoy this soup. If you think the tofu tastes too bland or you are the type of person who likes more savory & pungent flavors, you can always enjoy with soy sauce or kimchi.

This bean stew can be little spicy, but most of you will find it is more nutty. For this stew, you will be able to enjoy texture of okara (soy pulp).

You can feel free to bring some soy pulp for yourself, too. Lovely service, right? ????
