Korean healing books, which provide comfort to modern people suffering from burnout, are attracting global attention as the latest trend after K-pop and K-dramas.The Economist reported that healing novels began to gain popularity among young female readers in South Korea during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly through online platforms, and that recommendations from K-pop stars helped fuel the boom, prompting major global publishers to take notice. According to The Economist, major publishing companies like Bloomsbury and HarperCollins have published or acquired the rights to Korean healing bestsellers, including the translated publication of ”Marigold Mind Laundry“ in the United States and the United Kingdom.
Furthermore, many foreign publishers expressed that they perceive Korean novels as synonymous with healing literature, and numerous Korean literary works have been published in 15 to 20 countries.
Clare Richards, who translated Yeon Somin‘s ”The Healing Season of Pottery“ into English ahead of its international release, said that the novel contains many ”cozy healing elements,“ from cats to kimchi and ice cream. The Economist pointed out that the background for the rise of healing novels in South Korea lies in the competitive social atmosphere and widespread burnout, noting that ”nap cafes“ are also commonly seen in Seoul.
