In Korean, ‘KISA (기사)’ means ‘driver.’ In Korea, a ‘KISA restaurant’ is a common term referring to a restaurant that primarily serves taxi drivers. These are known for their fast service and often serve set meals without a menu or have a limited, well-curated menu. Nowadays, many people who are not drivers also visit these restaurants for quick and filling meals at reasonable prices.
‘Kisa,’ which officially opened on April 20, 2024, has people lining up, with some waiting over two hours to dine. The menu includes seasonal side dishes, bulgogi, spicy squid, and bibimbap, reminiscent of Korean ‘KISA restaurants.’ It offers affordable meals in the costly city of New York, serving individual trays per person. The decor captures the essence of a Korean restaurant from 40 years ago. They also hand out 25 cents to customers after their meal so they can enjoy a coffee from a vending machine on their way out.
