Olympian high jumper Woo Sang-hyeok, also known as “smile jumper” because he always puts his smile on his face on the field, has topped the list for the Men’s High Jump World Ranking by the World Athletics. This is the first time for a South Korean track and field athlete.
According to the world rankings, Woo Sang-hyeok outcompeted Gianmarco Tamberi, an Italian athlete who had been ranked world No. 1 since last Fall.
The World Athletics calculates the world rankings based on the two categories : the ‘record’ ranking and ‘world ranking points.’ For the ‘record’ ranking, Woo Sang-hyeok was pushed to second place in the ‘2022 season record ranking’; however, he was ranked first in the ‘World Ranking’ section, which converts the results of each tournament into the points, and was recgonized as the high jumper with the most consistent and outstanidng performance over the past 12 months.
The Korean Athletics Federation will hold a prize award ceremony for Woo Sang-hyeok at Seoul Olympic Parktel.
