A chain collision involving 44 vehicles occurred near Gusan IC on Jayuro in Ilsanseo-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, at approximately 5:15 a.m. on January 14, 2025, due to icy road conditions. According to the police and fire authorities, a total of three accidents involving 105 vehicles occurred on Jayuro and the Seoul-Munsan Expressway in Goyang City between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. today.
The first accident happened around 5:15 a.m. near Gusan IC, in the direction of Paju, involving 44 vehicles, including trucks, buses, and passenger cars. The Gyeonggi Northern Fire and Disaster Headquarters reported that the incident included four cases of six-car collisions, one three-car collision, six two-car collisions, and five single-vehicle accidents.
At approximately 5:50 a.m., another multi-vehicle collision involving 43 vehicles occurred near the Goyang Junction on the Seoul-Munsan Expressway in the direction of Munsan in Deogyang-gu, Goyang. This accident resulted in one person sustaining serious injuries and 12 others with minor injuries. Later, at around 6:40 a.m., an additional collision involving 18 vehicles took place on the Seoul-Munsan Expressway near the back of the Goyang Rest Area, close to Heungdo IC. Two individuals were injured and transported to the hospital.
The police and fire authorities have identified ”black ice,“ formed due to snow and freezing temperatures from the previous night, as the primary cause of these accidents. Investigations into the details of the incidents are ongoing.
