New Foreigners-Only Casino To Open In South Korea

Global Resort Company Mohegan Has Received A License To Operate A Foreigner-Only Casino At The Inspire Complex In Yeongjongdo Island, Incheon

This is the first new license for a foreigner-only casino business in 19 years, since Grand Korea Leisure (Seven Luck Casino) was licensed in 2005. When the casino under Inspire Resort opens, it will be the largest foreigner-only casino in Korea with more than 150 gaming tables, 390 slot machines, and a 160-seat electronic table game (ETG) stadium.

There will also be a fine dining section, entertainment bar and lounge for casino patrons, and a VIP-only casino floor. Including the newly opened casinos under Inspire Resorts, there are a total of 17 foreigner-only casinos in Korea. Excluding the eight facilities on Jeju Island, half of them are located in the Seoul metropolitan area, with three in Seoul and two in Yeongjong Island.

Yeongjongdo Island is adjacent to Incheon International Airport, so it will have a great effect of attracting customers due to its easy accessibility. After experiencing casinos in Incheon, customers can go inland or travel to Jeju Island. It creates a virtuous cycle for the entire market,” industry insider said.

In March 2016, the company was selected as part of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s integrated resort competition plan, and was subsequently granted a preliminary license for a foreigner-only casino business.

Over the next seven years, Inspire invested approximately USD 1.6 billion, including USD 695 million in foreign investment, to develop the complex.
