New Starbucks in South Korea Offers a Peek into Life in North Korea

On November 29, 2024, a new Starbucks opened on Mount Aegibong in Gimpo, South Korea, offering a clear view of North Korean land. It is said that the city of Gimpo played an active role in bringing this establishment here. By placing a café in this location within South Korea’s Civilian Control Line, which is the only divided nation in the world, it seems to have chosen the path of becoming a fresh tourist destination.

Located just 1.4 km away from Kaepung-gun in North Korea, this spot is near the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), and access requires passing through a military checkpoint. From here, visitors can see North Korean villages and Mount Songak in Gaeseong with the naked eye. Using a telescope installed on the terrace, one can even catch a glimpse of North Korean residents.
