North Korea is Sending ‘Garbage Balloons’ to South Korea Again

About two hours ago, North Korea sent balloons carrying garbage and other materials towards South Korea, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Since North Korea is launching these garbage balloons towards the South again, please be cautious of falling objects and do not touch any fallen balloons. Instead, report them to the nearest military unit or police station. The Joint Chiefs of Staff are also monitoring the possibility of additional launches overnight.

On May 26, 2024, North Korea announced that they would launch balloons towards the South in retaliation for some defector groups sending anti-North Korea leaflets. Consequently, they launched around 260 garbage balloons to the South starting the night of May 28. Now, three days later, they have resumed sending garbage balloons.

According to the Meteorological Administration, northwesterly winds are forecasted over the Korean Peninsula today and tomorrow, creating favorable conditions for North Korea to send balloons southward if they choose to do so.
