Police have arrested two people, three days after the walls of Gyeongbokgung Palace were first defaced with spray graffiti. Around 7:08 PM on December 19, police arrested a male and female suspect at their home. Both were teenagers, the man 17 and the woman 16. They reportedly acted after an acquaintance offered to pay them to leave the graffiti.

The man who graffitied Gyeongbokgung Palace turned himself in a day later. At 10:20 p.m. on December 17, a day after the first graffiti, a man in his 20s who spray-painted singer names and album titles on the restoration site of Gyeongbokgung Palace’s Youngchumun Gate told police that he “wanted to get attention.” The unemployed man was found to have no mental illness and was not intoxicated at the time of the crime. Police believe that this 20-year-old man, who turned himself in to the Jongno Police Station on December 18, is unrelated to the two teenagers arrested on December 19.

In a blog post on the morning of December 20, he wrote :

“I was trying to be a dick about what MSCHIEF says, sorry. No, actually, I’m not sorry. I was just doing art, and I’m a little embarrassed that I misspelled it. It would have been better if I had made the heart black. My biggest regret is that I didn’t spell out MSCHIEF’s name. I think everyone is taking the situation too seriously, it’s just graffiti.
