Pianist Han Tong-il, the First Korean To Win An International Music Competition, Has Passed Away

Known as Korea’s “first musical prodigy,” Han inspired The Commander of the United States Forces Korea with his extraordinary talent. With the commander’s assistance, Han received a scholarship to attend The Juilliard School in the United States shortly after the Korean War. In 1965, he became the first Korean to win the prestigious Leventritt Competition, where Leonard Bernstein served as the chairman of the jury. In recognition of his achievements, he was awarded the Moran Medal, part of the Order of Civil Merit, in 1973.

Following his success, Han embarked on a teaching career at institutions such as Indiana University, Illinois State University, and Boston University. In his later years, he actively collaborated with the Heart Heart Orchestra, composed of individuals with developmental disabilities. Pianist Han Tong-il held a special affection for Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 and gifted the world with music of clarity and beauty. We express our gratitude for the legacy of his inspiring artistry.
