With the commander’s assistance, Han received a scholarship to attend The Juilliard School in the United States shortly after the Korean War. In 1965, he became the first Korean to win the prestigious Leventritt Competition, where Leonard Bernstein served as the chairman of the jury. In recognition of his achievements, he was awarded the Moran Medal, part of the Order of Civil Merit, in 1973.
Following his success, Han embarked on a teaching career at institutions such as Indiana University, Illinois State University, and Boston University.
