Based on their diverse spectrum, Silica Gel is renowned for their explosive live performances, culminating in the most innovative and grand sound today in South Korean indie music scene. They emerged onto the indie scene in August 2015 and gained recognition with their full-length album [Silica Gel], released in October 2016, earning critical acclaim and three rookie awards, including “New Artist of the Year” at the Korean Popular Music Awards. They are a performance team known for combining VJing (real-time production and broadcasting of visual and interactive content essential for clubs, concerts, and commercial events) with psychedelic rock music. As a result, attendees of their shows are particularly enthusiastic.
Initially formed for a school project, which included a VJ and a bassist handling media arts, their group quickly expanded. They released their debut single in 2015 and by October of the following year, their first full-length album, ‘Silica Gel,’ was released. As they began their music activities in earnest, the lifestyles of the former members who handled visuals and the current members diverged. The friends who handled visuals had other jobs and couldn’t risk their careers because of their music commitments. Ultimately, they parted ways for their respective futures, leaving the current lineup with four members.
Since 2016, Silica Gel originally garnered attention in the indie scene with various awards and their unique use of VJing. However, starting from their activities in the 2020s, they have increasingly shown influence across multiple facets, moving towards mainstream success and gaining recognition for bringing new influence to the music industry.
During the interview with Sports Seoul, Kim Chunchu explained, “If Silica Gel’s music has been somewhat obscure to the public so far, ‘No Pain,’ released in 2022, was a new attempt.” Choi Woonghee stated, “During the COVID-19 era, we were just scrambling to survive. We kept making music somehow, but there was no way to show ourselves to the public. When we made ‘No Pain,’ I was confident that fans would like it, but I didn’t expect it to spread like this because I thought it was a melancholic song. I was surprised by the fans’ reactions. The response to this song released after the pandemic surged like a tidal wave and became the driving force behind our activities.”
