Repeat DUI Offenders in South Korea Must Drive Vehicles with an “Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device”

© Yonhap News

From October 25, 2024, repeat DUI (driving under the influence) offenders in South Korea will only be allowed to drive vehicles equipped with an “alcohol ignition interlock device.” This is due to the implementation of an amendment to the Road Traffic Act, requiring individuals at high risk of habitual drunk driving to receive a conditional driver’s license.

The “alcohol ignition interlock device” measures the driver’s breath before starting the car, allowing the engine to start only if no alcohol is detected. This measure applies to drivers caught drunk driving twice or more within the last five years. Even when renting or borrowing a vehicle that is not their own, they are required to drive a car equipped with the alcohol ignition interlock device. Violating this requirement will result in the cancellation of their conditional driver’s license. We genuinely hope that this will help establish a safer driving culture in South Korea.
