He is the head of ROKH, a fashion brand that shines a spotlight on Korean fashion at the prestigious Paris Fashion Week, the dream stage for all fashion designers. After winning the fashion show at Central Saint Martins, he was scouted by Phoebe Philo and began his career at Céline. He is also the first Korean recipient of the LVMH Prize.
Born in Korea in 1984, Rok moved to Texas, USA, with his family during his childhood. After spending his early years there, he enrolled in the Central Saint Martins fashion school in London. He majored in menswear during his bachelor’s studies and was mentored by Louise Wilson, who also taught designers like McQueen and Christopher Kane. On Wilson‘s recommendation, he entered the women’s wear master‘s program at Central Saint Martins, where he was selected for the best collection at the graduate fashion show. During this time, Phoebe Philo offered him a position at Céline, where he started his career as a ready-to-wear designer for three years. He later worked as a freelance designer at Louis Vuitton and Chloé before launching his fashion brand, ROKH, in 2016. In 2018, Rok Hwang received the LVMH Prize Special Prize, becoming the first Korean to be listed among the winners.
The ROKH brand can be described with three words: ’Timeless, Primitive, Sensual.‘ His hallmark is meticulously and deconstructively reinterpreting classic designs. He once explained that his design philosophy for ROKH is about reconstruction rather than deconstruction. Recently, he collaborated with H&M, designing belts and various other products.
