Starting January 24, 2025, the scattering of ashes, a burial method involving the dispersion of cremated remains into nature, will be permitted in South Korea. According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare of South Korea, designated areas for ash scattering include the ocean at least 5 km away from the coastline and burial facilities equipped with specific areas or facilities for scattering ashes.

Specific methods for scattering include releasing ashes and fresh flowers near the water’s surface, ensuring that such activities do not obstruct navigation, fishing activities, or the cultivation of marine plants and animals. Previously, burial laws only recognized traditional burial, cremation, and tree burials in South Korea.

Ash scattering existed in a legal gray area, neither explicitly permitted nor prohibited. Considering public preference and land shortages, the government has decided to institutionalize ash scattering as a legal burial method.
