Since When Is Seoul The Capital Of South Korea?

On July 17, 1392, the long-lived king of Goryeo, Taejo (personal name Yi Seong-gye), founded a new nation called Joseon Dynasty. At the time, Goryeo had been ruled by the Yuan Dynasty (officially the Great Yuan) for a long time and was facing very difficult times. Eventually, Seong-gye and his followers rallied together to create a new nation, Joseon, to replace the fading Goryeo, and Seong-gye became the first ruler of Joseon Dynasty.

They Needed A New City To Make A Fresh Start In A New Country

Seong-gye chose “Hanyang” as the new capital, and on October 25, 1394, he left Gaekyung, the capital of Goryeo, and arrived in Hanyang on October 28, 1984. Today’s Seoul was called “Hanyang” during the Joseon Dynasty. YES, Seoul has a history of about 620 years as the capital from the Joseon Dynasty to the Republic of Korea.

Why Did Seoul Become The Capital?

Seoul is geographically located in the center of the Korean Peninsula, with easy access to both land and water transportation via the Han River, making it the perfect location for a new dynasty. In addition, if you look at the topography of Seoul, there are Taraksan, Inwangsan, Namsan, and Baekaksan surrounding Seoul in the east, west, and north, respectively, and the water flowing down from the mountains gathers in the city center and flows from west to east. forming Cheonggyecheon, an inland stream.

Seoul was a beautiful place with an exquisite combination of mountains and rivers, and it was suitable for human habitation, making it the capital of the country.
