South Korea national football team captain Son Heung-min publicly commented in support of Hwang Hee-chan, who experienced racial discrimination during a practice match. Last night, Son Heung-min wrote “By your side mate” in a comment on Hwang Hee-chan’s Instagram post where he expressed his feelings about racial discrimination, accompanied by the hashtag “No Room For Racism.”
Earlier, Hwang Hee-chan had reportedly heard racially discriminatory remarks during a friendly match against Italian club Como 1907 on July 16. This incident led to teammate Daniel Podence becoming upset and getting sent off after physically confronting the player who made the remarks.
Meanwhile, Como club issued a statement explaining the incident, referring to it as an overreaction. Despite the club’s explanation, criticism towards Como has not subsided. The term “Jackie Chan” is known to be occasionally used abroad as a derogatory term towards Asians, implying racial discrimination with the meaning of “All Asians look alike.”
