A wildfire broke out on March 22, 2025, in a mountain in Sicheon-myeon, Sancheong-gun, Gyeongnam, South Korea. Despite deploying 20 helicopters and 300 firefighters, strong winds and dry conditions caused the fire to spread, prompting authorities to issue the highest wildfire alert, Level 3.
Since then, wildfires have erupted nationwide, leading the government to raise the wildfire crisis alert to “Severe.” Large-scale fires have triggered Level 3 responses in Sancheong, Uiseong, and Ulsan, forcing evacuations and road closures. Three days ago alone, 30 wildfires broke out, with some proving difficult to contain due to harsh weather conditions. Hadong-gun in Gyeongnam, Uiseong-gun in Gyeongbuk, and Ulsan Ulju have now been declared special disaster zones, joining Sancheong. These areas require urgent government assistance due to extensive damage and displaced residents.
Meanwhile, fires are now approaching the UNESCO World Heritage site Hahoe Village and Byeongsan Seowon, heightening concerns. In response, the Cultural Heritage Administration has issued the highest-level disaster alert, ” Severe.”
Prayers for South Korea.
