South Korea to Experience Population Decline Faster Than The Black Death

The New York Times (NYT) recently pointed out that the rate of population decline in South Korea could be faster than during medieval Europe in the 14th century, when the population plummeted following the Black Death outbreak.

By The End Of This Year, South Korea’s Total Fertility Rate Is Expected To Fall To 0.6 Children For The First Time Ever

According to Statistics Korea, South Korea’s total fertility rate in 2022 is 0.78. The fertility rate barely stayed above 1 until 2017, but it dropped below 1 in 2018, hitting 0.98. Since then, the rate has been declining every year: 0.92 in 2019, 0.84 in 2020, and 0.81 in 2021.

In Addition, The Number Of Marriages Has Also Dropped Significantly

The number of marriages continues to decline. In September 2023, there were 12,941 marriages. That’s down 12.3% from the same month last year (14,784). Many argue that social and institutional changes are needed to recognize and support childbearing outside of marriage.
