South Korea Witnesses a 32% Surge In Deaths From Suicide

According to data from the Statistics Korea, the number of people who took their own lives in South Korea in January 2024 surged by 32.3% compared to the same month last year, reaching 1,306 deaths (compared to 987 deaths in January of 2023). This increase is particularly notable compared to the figures from 2021, 2022, and 2023.

While the number of female suicide deaths increased by 9.1% compared to January of the previous year, male suicide deaths saw a significant surge of 42.4%. South Korea has consistently struggled with its suicide rate, remaining at the top of OECD rankings since the organization began compiling statistics, except for the period when Lithuania first joined the OECD.

This situation is prompting calls for urgent government and local authority action to address the national crisis, including proactive measures to support vulnerable groups and implement effective suicide prevention strategies.
