South Korean national volleyball player Kim Yeon-koung held her national team retirement match and ceremony yesterday, June 8, 2024, at Jamsil Indoor Stadium in Seoul. Kim Yeon-koung said, ”I am truly grateful to be able to share my retirement ceremony with so many people. I have played for a long time with the Korean national flag. From the days when I dreamed of wearing the national emblem as a child until now, I have had many thoughts. If it weren‘t for everyone here, women’s volleyball wouldn‘t have received as much attention.“
Seniors and teammates who played alongside Kim Yeon-koung in the national team also participated in the retirement ceremony. This included ten players such as Yang Hyo-jin (Hyundai E&C) and Kim Su-ji (Heungkuk Life), members of the Tokyo Olympics semifinal team, as well as Han Song-yi and Kim Sanee, members of the London Olympics semifinal team.
Kim Yeon-koung’s career as a national team player began in 2005 and spanned approximately 16 years until 2021, during which she represented Korean volleyball. She significantly elevated the status of Korean volleyball on the international stage, achieving remarkable results such as finishing fourth at the 2012 London Olympics. Additionally, winning the gold medal at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games was one of the highlights of her career.
South Korean comedian and host Yoo Jae-suk, actor and entertainer Lee Kwang-soo, along with TV producer Na Young-seok, are watching Kim Yeon-koung’s national team retirement match.
Congratulations and thanks to Kim Yeon-koung, who has elevated the status of South Korean women‘s volleyball.
