South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has declared a state of emergency. In an emergency address at the Yongsan Presidential Office tonight, President Yoon stated, “I declare a state of emergency to protect free South Korea from the threat of North Korean communist forces, to eradicate the treacherous pro-North anti-state forces who are depriving our people of their freedom and happiness, and to defend the constitutional order of liberty.”

This is the first state of emergency declared in 43 years, since January 1981. Meanwhile, as President Yoon announced the state of emergency, the National Assembly’s security forces closed the doors, blocking the access of lawmakers.
