South Korea’s Population Has Increased After Three Years

According to the Statistics Korea, the population of South Korea reached 51,775,000 in 2023, marking an increase after three years.

The Increase Of The Korean Population Is Primarily Due To A Sharp Rise In The Number Of Foreigners

Here, foreigners mean non-Korean nationals residing in the country for more than three months. Foreigners who acquire Korean citizenship are classified as nationals. In 2023, the foreign population reached 1,935,000. This represents an increase of 183,000 (10.4%) from the previous year. This is the largest increase recorded since the annual population censuses began.

Foreign Population by Nationality:

  • Ethnic Chinese from Korea: 532,000
  • Vietnamese: 247,000
  • Chinese: 221,000
  • Thai: 191,000

However, The National Population Has Decreased

In 2023, the national population was 49,839,000. This represents a decrease of 101,000 (0.2%) from the previous year. The national population has been decreasing annually since 2021. The decline is due to a ‘natural decrease,’ where the number of deaths exceeds the number of births.

Another Severe Problem Is The Decline In The Working-age Population

The working-age population (ages 15-64) has also been decreasing for six years. In 2023, the working-age population was 36,546,000 (71% of the total population). This represents a decrease of 140,000 (-0.4%) from the previous year.
