Starting in 2025, May 15 will be designated as “Sejong the Great’s Birthday” and become a national commemorative day in South Korea. Unlike public holidays, a national commemorative day serves to reflect on the significance of that particular date. 🇰🇷
Until now, various exhibitions and performances related to King Sejong and Hangeul have been organized independently by the South Korean government, local governments, and civil organizations on May 15, the birthday of King Sejong. This led to calls for making it a national commemorative day and holding official state events. An official from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety stated, “As it is designated as a national commemorative day, meaningful events to highlight King Sejong’s achievements will be expanded, and the public will have a greater appreciation for the value of Hangeul.”
King Sejong, born on May 15, 1397, was the fourth king of the Joseon Dynasty. He is well-known for creating Hunminjeongeum, an efficient and scientific writing system, which later became known as Hangeul. He initiated this system after witnessing his people struggle to understand farming manuals because they were unable to read. Hunminjeongeum was used by both the royal court and the general public and was further developed into Hangeul in the 20th century by independence activist Ju Si-gyeong, becoming the official script of South Korea as it is widely used today.
