SURFYYBEACH: A Korean Heaven for Surfers

More tubes than surfboards

Usually, tubes are the ones that get the most attention on Korean beaches. If you go to the beach during summer in Korea, you’ll see a lot of people floating in tubes rather than surfing or swimming.

But then, what about surfing? Is there any places where surfers can go in Korea?

History of Surfing in Korea

Duke Point, Jungmun Saekdal Beach: It’s where Lee Chang-nam first spread surfing in Jeju.

It wasn’t until the 1990s that surfing was introduced in Korea by a Korean Japanese surfer Lee Chang-nam. He went back and forth between Jeju Island and Japan and taught surfing.

Until then, surfing was an activity enjoyed by only a small number of surfing enthusiasts. There were not many places to enjoy surfing in Korea.

By the mid-to-late 2010s, the number of surfing population rapidly increased as more surfing spots were created.

Surf culture has spread around Gangwon-do, where there are nice waves for surfing. Now, there are places to go surfing in all three seas (west, east, south) of Korea.
