The Biggest Ice Fishing Festival Has Started Today in Hwacheon, Korea

The 2023 Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival has started today. It will continue through January 29, 2023. Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival is known to be included in one of the biggest winter festivals in the world. The festival was held in three years. Although being an annual event, the festival couldn’t take place from 2020 to 2022 due to weather and Covid-19 issues.

By cutting holes in the frozen river, people can catch sancheoneo, a species of trout. Programs include trout ice fishing, barehanded fishing, ice sledding, etc.

Hwacheon-gun estimated that 129,000 tourists gathered on the first day of the festival.
