his is an officially affiliated side exhibition of the Biennale. Please note that the photos attached here are works by Lee Bae but are not affiliated with the exhibition.
The title of the solo exhibition is <La maison de la Lune Brûlée (Burning the Sheaf/달집태우기)
The exhibition will introduce the traditional culture of moonlighting in Cheongdo city in North Gyeongsang province, the artist’s hometown. Moonlighting is the practice of setting fire to a wooden or straw sheaf as the moon rises on the full moon of the Lunar New Year to light up the surroundings, which is used to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune.
On February 24th of this year in Cheongdo, wishes from around the world were collected, written on traditional pieces of Korean traditional Hanji paper, tied to a sheaf, and burned. Footage of the process will be made into a video installation, Burning (2024), which will be screened during the exhibition.

Based in Paris, Lee Bae has been actively working between Korea, Paris, and New York for over 20 years, bringing Korean monochrome painting to the international stage through the material of charcoal and stylistic abstraction in black and white. His work retains an oriental aura with its restrained labyrinth of white space and black strokes, yet it plays a prominent role within the larger currents of contemporary aesthetics of abstraction.
It is an international art exhibition that attracts more than 500,000 visitors from around the world and is one of the most influential art events in the world.
