South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been arrested. The Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) officially announced that it executed an arrest warrant for President Yoon at 10:33 a.m. on January 15, 2025. This occurred 43 days after the onset of the ”2024 South Korean Martial Law Crisis.“ This marks the first time in South Korean constitutional history that a sitting president has been arrested by an investigative authority.

President Yoon has consistently denied the allegations, claiming that the martial law was declared as a warning and that only a small number of troops were deployed to maintain order. He has also rejected the validity of the CIO’s authority to request an arrest warrant for rebellion charges, suggesting he is likely to exercise his right to remain silent during the investigation.
