The South Korean government has been issuing next-generation e-passports and existing green passports at the same time since May 31, 2022. This was a transitional measure during the transition to the new passport, with the remaining green passports being issued with the aim of exhausting the existing stock by December 31, 2024. The government originally expected to run out of passports by December 2024, but due to the growing interest, the government is ending the parallel issuance program 13 months earlier than expected.
The new indigo-colored passport is made of polycarbonate, a type of plastic, with a new passport numbering system and the latest security technology. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs believes that the new passport will help protect citizens’ identities and prevent crime, as it is more difficult to forge or alter than existing passports.
