‘Exhuma‘ is a mystery occult film that revolves around the bizarre events that unfold when a shaman named ‘Hwa-Rim’ and Bong-gil’, who receives a huge commission from LA, encounter a strange disease affecting the eldest son of a household. Director Jang Jae-hyun shares the world of Korean traditional shamanism and geomancy in this film.
“파묘” means “to dig a grave(묘)”. It’s no exaggeration to say that this word captures the essence of the movie’s occult mystery.
The film was inspired by director Jang Jae-hyun‘s childhood memories of watching an old grave in the back mountain of his neighborhood being moved.
“I saw some people moved the grave because the highway was built and the mountain disappeared. I remember clearly the scene of digging up the ground and pulling out the rotten coffin, which was over 100 years old. It was a shock, a strange feeling of not wanting to see it, but wanting to see it. leven remember the smell of the dirt from the grave,” said Jang.
