According to the recently released “2023 Deepfake Status Report” by the American cybersecurity firm Security Hero, 53% of deepfake sexual exploitation material originates from South Korea. In particular, an analysis of around 100 websites with approximately 100,000 pieces of content revealed that more than half of the victims of deepfake sexual exploitation are female K-pop singers and Korean actresses. Additionally, 8 out of the top 10 victims with the most deepfake sexual exploitation videos produced are Korean female singers.
Entertainment agencies such as YG and JYP, which represent female K-pop groups, have officially stated that they are actively monitoring and addressing the widespread and malicious illegal activities related to deepfake sexual exploitation. They are working to delete and block illegal videos and are pursuing all possible legal actions, including criminal proceedings. Additionally, Kwon Eun-bi, NewJeans, and others are cooperating with police investigations into those who distribute and sell deepfake sexual exploitation material.
Deepfake crimes involve using advanced AI to create realistic but fake digital content intended to deceive or harm individuals. This technology can be misused for defamation, fraud, and cyberbullying. Legal and ethical challenges are significant, and efforts are ongoing to develop detection methods and regulations.
