In South Korea, which holds the highest suicide rate in the world, the number of suicide deaths has increased by 10% this year compared to last year. On August 6, 2024, the Ministry of Health and Welfare of South Korea held a public-private consultation to discuss measures for suicide prevention. According to the Ministry, the number of suicide deaths from January to May this year was 6,375, representing a 10.1% increase compared to the same period last year.

The South Korean government has analyzed that factors such as social isolation, economic hardship, depression, and anxiety, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, are contributing to this rise. Currently, South Korea‘s suicide rate is twice the OECD average (24.1 per 100,000 population). The government plans to discuss measures such as mandatory suicide prevention education and strengthening the identification of high-risk individuals.
